Where is the market heading?

OEMs. Driven by the need to meet government fuel-efficiency standards, as well as by new engine designs and features (e.g., turbochargers) that put engine oils under more punishing conditions, OEMs are switching to lower-viscosity oils, which require synthetics. That's why today about one in four cars requires a synthetic oil change.

We're also in the midst of a major viscosity transition. As of 2020,  0W-20, 5W-20, and 5W-30 each represent 25 percent of the market. That means you need to carry significant inventory in all three. The rest of the market will be older viscosities such as 10W-40 and others like Toyota's 0W-16. 

Fourteen of the 20 best-selling US cars are now factory-filled with synthetic motor oils. 

Consumers. Today, people are driving less, keeping their cars longer, and extending their drain intervals. More and more consumers are also opting to go to an installer rather than change their own oil–partly due to changing demographics, but also because complex engine technology is making it harder for the DIYer.
